Katinka Simonse
Katinka Simonse (a.k.a. TINKEBELL) is an Amsterdam-based artist whose projects evolve from her research into the issues and strategies of contemporary populist movements—such as animal rights activism—to reveal the inherent yet inconspicuous hypocrisy of these movements, especially in relation to the evocation of empathy. Simonse received her MFA in Design from the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam (2003-2005) and her BFA Fine Arts from Fontys voor Beeldende Vorming Tilburg, the Netherlands. She has also studied graphic design and advertising at St-Lucas Boxtel, the Netherlands (1997-1999) and fine and applied arts at VTS Technicum Antwerp, Belgium (1996-1997). Since May 2007, Simonse has worked as part of the artist-group EMPATHYtm alongside Jonas Staal and Vincent WJ van Gerven Oei. EMPATHYtm have participated in residencies in Chicago (InCUBATE, April 2008) and Beijing (Dagacun Art District, May-June 2008). Simonse's solo exhibitions include Planet Art, Volkskrant Gebouw, Amsterdam (upcoming, October 2008); Popple, Art Rotterdam, represented by Torch Gallery, Rotterdam (February 2008); supercalifragilisticexpialidocious/SAVE THE PETS (1), Masters Gallery, Amsterdam (January 2008). Her work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions and festivals, notably GOGBOT festival EnvironMental Arts, Media and Technology 2008, Enschede, the Netherlands (upcoming, September 2008); Version 08, Chicago (17-27 April 2008); The Bloody Beautiful Show, Historical Museum Schielandhuis, Rotterdam (October 2007-March 2008); and ÒPOPPETÓ, Galerie Roodkapje, Rotterdam (April 2007).
