31 July – 31 August 2008

c a m e r a  - the “small chamber” -  is a new exhibition space in the Old Town of Edinburgh. It consists of a small glass cabinet set into the wall next to the Museum’s main entrance on 140 Canongate, the Royal Mile.

The Museum of Edinburgh houses an impressive collection of carefully selected objects and drawings, a coherent but still expandable labyrinth of information. The building itself is of a rather labyrinthine architecture and appears larger from the inside than from the outside. The glass cabinet will form a satellite observatory to this microcosm of knowledge.

c a m e r a ’ s  perspective in the context of the city will set a counterpoint to Edinburgh’s famous Camera Obscura at the other end of the Royal Mile: While the latter overlooks the city, the Festival, and the wider world in a sweeping panorama, the  c a m e r a  in Canongate may decide to look closer into and through their infinite internal structures.

“Infinity and Perspective” is programmed as a series of four exhibitions by international young artists and architects:

30 July - 6 Aug     Marion Preez, Edinburgh
8 Aug – 14 Aug     Keith Winter and Dongfang Gao, Belfast
16 Aug – 22 Aug   Daniel Smernicki, Edinburgh
24 Aug – 31 Aug   Julia Martin, Edinburgh/Berlin.

Their individual or collaborative works engage with

imaginations and illusions of infinite systems,
perspective and its influence on the perception of truth,
methodically manipulated perspectives and projections of the mind,
the nature and architecture of knowledge,
viewpoints and viewfinders,
the construction of intricate intellectual and spatial labyrinths, and the possibility of their implosion.

The exhibitions will be viewed from the street, 24h a day – there is no direct access into the space.
